Understand How You Use Power

Start by applying for this idea, then get to know your own electricity. Gather a year of meter readings or consumption records and look at the shape of them: how much power the building draws, at what times of day, and how that changes between the wet and dry seasons. A school empties in the holidays; an irrigation pump works hardest when the rain stops. Panels work best when they match the rhythm of the place.

Talk to the people who use the building. Ask the cook which equipment matters most, the nurse what happens when the fridge loses power, the teacher how often a power cut ends a lesson early, the farmer how many hours the diesel pump runs. These conversations tell you what the system needs to protect, which matters far more than any single figure.

Then choose someone to lead. One person keeps the records, walks the site with the assessors and carries news back to everyone else — a head teacher, a farm manager, a committee member. Agree together what you want to change: fewer outages, no more fumes from the generator, a building that runs on daylight, or all three.

Look At Your Roof

Walk the roof, or the patch of ground you could use, and look at it the way the panels will. Which way does it face? What throws shade across it during the day — a water tank, a mango tree, the wall next door? Shade on one panel pulls down the output of many, so map the shadows in the morning, at midday and in the afternoon.

Be honest about the structure. Panels stay up for twenty-five years or more, so any repair the roof needs in the next few years belongs before the installation, not after. Look at the sheeting, the beams beneath it, and how a working crew would reach it safely. Where the roof cannot take the weight or the space falls short, ground mounting often works instead.

Think about where the equipment will sit — somewhere shaded, ventilated, dry and secure, within a sensible cable run of your main switchboard. If your community rents the building, or a committee holds it, ask permission now and get it in writing. Sorting that early keeps everything moving when installation day arrives.

Shape The System Together

Engineers take your consumption records and site notes and come back with a design: how many panels, where they sit, and how much electricity they should produce each month. Read it beside your own records. A good design covers a large share of what the building uses without generating far more than it can absorb.

Bring your local knowledge into that conversation. You know which weeks matter most, where the roof leaks, how thickly the dry-season dust settles, whether the grid drops out every fortnight. Where outages threaten a vaccine fridge or a cold room, ask about batteries. Where you still run diesel pumps, ask about solar pumping. Where a kitchen or laundry heats water all day, ask about solar water heating.

Keep asking questions until the design makes sense to you. How long do the panels last? What happens if output falls short of the projection? How will you see the numbers? Nobody should agree to something they cannot explain to their own community. Once everyone understands it, settle the design and choose an installation date that respects term times, harvests or busy seasons.

Fit The Panels Safely

A local installation team fits the system while engineers check the design, the equipment and the safety of the work. Local crews know the roofs, the weather and the ways of working in your area; the technical oversight keeps quality consistent from one community to the next.

Get the site ready. Clear access to the roof, set aside somewhere dry to store materials, and agree working hours that protect lessons, patients or production. Keep children and animals away from the work area. Ask someone to stay on hand across the installation days, so questions get answered instead of holding everything up.

Make the handover a proper one. Walk the finished system with the crew: how to read the inverter, how to follow production on a phone, where the switches sit and how to shut everything down safely if you ever need to. Keep the paperwork and photographs together somewhere safe. If children learn in your building, bring them out to watch the panels go up — installation day teaches more about energy than any textbook.

Watch, Care And Share

Once the panels start working, follow the numbers. Live production data shows what your roof generates each day, and comparing it with the design projection tells you quickly whether anything needs attention. Track how much of your electricity now comes from sunlight rather than the grid, and how much diesel or generator time the system has displaced — those figures are the story of what changed.

Look after the array. Dust, leaves and bird droppings all cut output, so agree who cleans the panels and how often; dry-season grime builds up fast across much of the region. Trim branches back before new shade creeps across the roof, and keep the inverter area clear, dry and ventilated. Small habits protect twenty-five years of clean generation.

Then share what you learn. Put the production figures somewhere visible, let students track them, and tell the neighbouring school, clinic or cooperative what worked and what surprised you. Mark the carbon your roof has avoided, and celebrate it publicly. A community that can see the panels, the numbers and the difference in the air becomes the reason the next roof gets covered.
