Community Fridges are accessible public spaces where local businesses and residents share surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, creating stronger communities whilst reducing environmental impact.
Community Fridges, also known as Solidarity or Honesty Fridges, have successfully operated across Spain, Germany, the UK, Ireland, and increasingly in the US. Over 100 fridges have been established in the UK since 2016, with demand growing rapidly.
The environmental impact is substantial. According to WRAP calculations, one Community Fridge can reduce CO2 emissions by 311 tonnes annually. Over three months, a single fridge can redistribute 12 tonnes of food waste and save households over $10,000 worth of food.
Hubbub UK (https://www.hubbub.org.uk/), the charity behind the Community Fridge Network, creates positive environmental campaigns that inspire healthier, greener lifestyle choices. They provide comprehensive support including digital toolkits, health and safety guidance, and ongoing network connections.
These fridges serve as springboards for broader community environmental action, often leading to community gardens, food cooperatives, or share shops. While they provide fresh food access, they're designed to complement rather than replace robust social programmes addressing food poverty's root causes.
This guide provides an overview of how to set up a Community Fridge. Hubbub UK have put together an amazing resource pack, which you can find in the Resources Section of your local Community Fridge page. All of these materials should be used as guidance and bear in mind that one size doesn't always fit all as there are many ways to run a successful Community Fridge.
