Create a welcoming workshop space where men gather to share skills, build friendships, and contribute to their community through hands-on projects and meaningful conversation.
The Men's Shed movement originated in Australia during the early 1990s and reached Ireland through John Evoy's vision in 2009. The Irish Men's Sheds Association now supports over 260 Sheds serving more than 6,000 men nationwide, with new Sheds registering weekly.
Research shows 91% of participants feel better about themselves, whilst 74% report improved home lives. The "shoulder to shoulder" approach recognises that men often communicate more naturally whilst engaged in practical activities rather than face-to-face conversation.
Successful Sheds operate on minimal budgets through community partnerships and volunteer support. Many secure premises through caretaker agreements, maintaining buildings in exchange for free use. The Irish Men's Sheds Association provides comprehensive support including specialised insurance arrangements through BHP Insurances, networking events, and ongoing mentorship.
Activities vary widely between Sheds - from woodworking and bicycle repair to community gardening and heritage projects. Each Shed develops its own character based on members' interests and local community needs, ensuring authentic grassroots development.
There are hundreds of Men's Sheds in Ireland but not yet one in every town and village, you can learn how to start one in your local community by downloading our 5 step guide. Once you're ready to go, get in touch to Start Your Own and we'll guide you through the process.
