Liter of Light Brazil – Educational Workshop

Liter of Light Brazil – Educational Workshop

An engaging hands-on workshop where participants learn about sustainability and solar energy by assembling Litro de Luz solar lamps; fostering environmental awareness, creativity, and social responsibility in schools, companies, and community centres.

The Oficina Educacional was created by Litro de Luz Brasil, a branch of the global Liter of Light movement active in over 15 countries. The initiative is recognised by the UN Global Compact and the Fundação Banco do Brasil as a certified social technology. The technology was originally developed by Brazilian inventor Alfredo Moser in 2002, transforming recycled plastic bottles into lighting solutions that have illuminated over one million lives worldwide.

Workshops can be adapted for different audiences: schools and universities integrate sessions into science, sustainability, or civic engagement curricula; corporations offer them as purpose-driven employee engagement or CSR training. A typical session runs 2–3 hours with approximately 30 participants. Participants assemble portable solar lamps (lampiões) using solar panels, LEDs, PET bottles, batteries, and circuits—learning how each component works together whilst understanding the broader social context of energy access.

The movement has worked with over 650 women's cooperatives and serves as a UNESCO International Day of Light ambassador. The initiative has received the 2015 Zayed Future Energy Prize, the 2016 St. Andrews Prize for the Environment, and the 2014-2015 World Habitat Award. Learn more at litrodeluz.com/acoes.
