Join a global movement introducing students to computer science through fun, one-hour coding activities that require no prior experience and work on any device.
Code.org, the organisation behind Hour of Code, is a non-profit dedicated to expanding computer science education globally. Since 2013, over 100 million students worldwide have participated in Hour of Code activities, with particular success in engaging girls and underrepresented groups in technology.
The programme traditionally runs during Computer Science Education Week (5-11 December) but can be organised year-round. Activities are available in over 48 languages and include options for every skill level, from kindergarten through secondary school. Many tutorials feature popular characters and themes that appeal to different interests.
Research shows computer science ranks among students' favourite subjects, alongside performing arts and design. With computing occupations representing the fastest-growing job sector, these skills provide valuable career preparation. The initiative has proven particularly effective at introducing girls to technology - more girls participated in the first Hour of Code than had tried computer science in the previous 70 years.
Virtual Hour of Code events became increasingly popular, offering flexibility for remote learning environments. The programme includes comprehensive teacher resources, volunteer speaker networks, and celebration materials like certificates and stickers to recognise student achievements.
While Hour of Code events are traditionally held in classrooms and other venues across the globe, you don’t need to be together in-person to enjoy the fun! You can also host a virtual Hour of Code.
