AsIAm delivers engaging 90-minute workshops to secondary schools, educating students about autism and empowering them to create more inclusive school environments through peer understanding and practical inclusion strategies.
AsIAm.ie is Ireland's central online hub for the autism community, founded in March 2014 by Adam Harris, a young adult with Asperger's Syndrome. The organisation works towards an Ireland where every citizen, including those with autism, can live and succeed "as they are".
The Schools Programme emerged from feedback highlighting the challenges students with autism face in secondary schools. AsIAm believes successful education outcomes depend not only on resources or legislation but also on school culture and student attitudes. Since its national roll-out in November 2014, the programme now has 35 speakers delivering workshops across Ireland.
Research shows that autism awareness education significantly improves peer acceptance and reduces bullying. The programme uses pre- and post-workshop surveys to measure changes in student knowledge and attitudes, ensuring quality assurance. Schools that participate often report improved social inclusion and reduced autism-related incidents.
