Parklets represent a global movement of design activism that transforms underutilised urban space. The concept originated from Park(ing) Day, an annual event where artists and activists temporarily convert metered parking spaces into public parks.
Better Block's approach uses plywood construction that's weather-resistant when properly treated. The modular designs can be customised with paint, flowers, and local touches whilst maintaining structural integrity. One participant noted: "We created an amazing opportunity for people to meet each other and I still can't believe how many people I met from my neighbourhood that I would not have met otherwise."
The Wikiblock library contains detailed cutting files and assembly instructions. Most cities have existing parklet programmes, but where they don't, Better Block provides guidance for working with municipal staff on permissions and insurance requirements.
These temporary installations typically last several months to a year depending on weather exposure and maintenance. Regular upkeep ensures the parklets remain attractive and welcoming to the community.

Initial planning should take approximately 3–6 hours. Obtaining permits may require a few hours to a couple of days. Fabrication of the parklet may take a few days, and installation should take only a couple of hours
