121digital brings young people and older adults together for intergenerational digital skills sharing, where tech-savvy tutors provide one-on-one lessons to help learners master their smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
Founded by Fintan Mulligan, who worked 30 years in computer software, 121digital began in Ashford, Co Wicklow, addressing local community needs. The programme now operates in over 70 locations including schools, universities, libraries, and companies nationwide.
The curriculum includes 17 professionally prepared tutor guides covering topics from basic device navigation to online government services. Learners receive a 60-page full-colour handbook for reference throughout the course. Many Transition Year students describe it as "the most rewarding thing" they've done, whilst adult participants report feeling more confident, secure, and connected.
The programme requires Garda vetting for facilitators working in school settings. 121digital provides ongoing support including venue setup guidance, recruitment strategies, and connection to existing programme locations. Success stories highlight reduced social isolation among older adults and enhanced interpersonal skills among young tutors.
